WSSO Trust is a Registered Charity which provides professional training and performance opportunities for young musicians throughout west and central Scotland. Since 1996, the University of Strathclyde has provided facilities and management for the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band on behalf of the 12 local authorities of the former Strathclyde Region. This website provides information and access to our activities

When the WSSSO and WSSCB gave their inaugural concert in the University of Strathclyde’s Barony Hall in December 1996, I think none of us involved would have expected that nearly 20 years later about 3000 young musicians have taken part. Some former members have gone on to international careers in music as performers, conductors, and composers. For many other members WSSO ensembles establish a lifelong interest and experience that they themselves can develop for others.

Every year now we have outstanding programmes put together by our excellent and dedicated artistic directors. Recognising that we are approaching our twentieth year the Trust Board decided we should take both the Orchestra and Concert Band on a concert tour in mainland Europe in summer 2016. Also it was agreed that we should work out ways in which younger players could take part in activities so that they can develop to become members of the full Orchestra and Concert Band. These plans are now well underway with the creation of the Training band and String Orchestra which performed for the first time at the Royal Conservatoire in September 2015.

None of this would be possible without our management team led by Derek Hart and all of the partners in the WSSO Trust who support these events and make them possible. Indeed the continuing strong partnership of the University of Strathclyde, RCS, and twelve local authorities in delivering a top class opportunity to their community in the West of Scotland very cost effectively is something remarkable in itself in these financially difficult times.
