WSSCB

The West of Scotland Schools Concert Band was established in 1996 following the break-up of the former Strathclyde Region.
Since then, WSSCB has continued to provide professional training and performance opportunities to talented woodwind, brass and percussion players from schools throughout the West of Scotland.

With many of the best young players in the West of Scotland in the Band, WSSCB can give its members an unequalled experience and tackle the challenges of large, symphonic windband repertoire under the expert direction of conductor, Nigel Boddice MBE.

Taster Day

This is an opportunity for members to meet before the main residential course in June. The aim is to rehearse and perform a programme of music in just one day!

The emphasis is firmly on having fun, getting to know each other and enjoying the challenge of learning and performing a programme of music in just 1 day. A huge success in 2006, we were pleased to welcome back former WSSO Trust Artistic Director, John Grant as conductor for the day.

WSSCB/RSAMD ‘Side by Side’ Event

A new event in 2006, the ‘Side by Side’ day was an opportunity for WSSCB to join forces with the RSAMD Wind Ensemble for a joint rehearsal under the direction of WSSCB conductor, Nigel Boddice and RSAMD Head of Brass, Bryan Allen.

The event was a huge success and gave WSSCB members a chance to play alongside some of the finest young musicians in Scotland.

WSSCB Percussionists also took part in a Timpani masterclass, given by RSAMD Head of Percussion, Kurt Hans Goedicke. Inspiring as ever, we are very grateful to Kurt for sharing his knowledge, experience and passion for the art of Timpani playing.

Thanks to all who took part, especially Nigel and Bryan for organising the event and to Heather, Kurt and the RSAMD students for making us feel so welcome.

Conductor – Nigel Boddice MBE

Nigel BoddiceNigel Boddice, Hon A.R.A.M, enjoys a busy, impressive and enterprising international conducting career. Among the highlights so far, are concerts, recordings and a live CD project for Naxos with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and some highly enjoyable children's concerts with the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland. As well, a British Council tour with the Armenian"Serenade" String Orchestra to the 2nd International Chamber Orchestra Festival in Yerevan .

For the last seven years he has been regularly commuting to Norway , having accepted the role as Chief Conductor to the Royal Norwegian Navy Band [K.N.M.M. ], and led the ensemble to a new and much admired international standing.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London and later with both the distinguished Scot, Sir Alexander Gibson and the Polish Maestro, Jerzy Maksymuick. Currently he is on the staff at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Nigel has been honored in the past by the Worshipful Company of Musicians, London, being the inaugural recipient of the Mortimer Medal for his beloved work in musical education principally for West Lothian, and also by the Society of Scottish Composers for his prolific presentation of contemporary works.

Over the last five years he has worked with countless orchestras and bands of every combination which has formed the basis of a strong repertoire in several mediums. He has recorded much for Radio and TV and has also completed several CD`s for Naxos, Doyen and Polyphonic. Recently, through his Scandinavian connections, he has been especially lucky to have collaborated with Ole Edvard Antonsen, Christian Linberg, Michaela Petri and Solveig Kringlebotn.

Back home in the UK, Nigel has continued with his distinctly versatile approach to work by directing and presenting the Salon Orchestra throughout Scotland and making New Year's Day appearances with the Philharmonica of Scotland.

Throughout the years, choral music has been an additional interest and featured in many a concert with for example, the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, the National Norwegian Girls Choir from Oslo and Norway's legendary Silverboys.

Future travel and concerts are planned and anticipated in Argentina, Germany and Denmark. Future Summer Schools include return visits to the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Scotland ,Glasgow Schools Orchestra , Moray and the R.S.A.M.D. Junior Orchestra.

Finally a brand new venture has just newly developed in Molde, where Nigel will direct their three orchestras amid the panoramic mountain landscapes of Middle Norway.

National Association of Youth Orchestras

Each year in August, WSSCB performs at NAYO’s Festival of British Youth Orchestras. These concerts take place at the Edinburgh Festival in Central Halls, Edinburgh and at the RSAMD, Glasgow.

Having had the advantage of the Taster Day, RSNO rehearsal, residential course and an additional rehearsal, the band is fresh, well prepared and ready to perform to the best of its ability.

For many, these concerts are the musical highlight of the year and 2006 was no exception. The Concert Band performed with style and control under conductor, Nigel Boddice and the programme was as challenging and exciting as ever.

A highlight from this year’s performance, was ‘Suite Vibes’ with soloist, Emma Grace, performing in the presence of composer, Adrian Drover. Also in the programme, the premiere, ‘The Declaration of Arbroath’ by Scottish composer, Andrew Duncan. Andrew was in attendance at New Lanark and the final concert in RSAMD, Glasgow.

The band rose to the occasion playing with style and maturity. The audience rose to its feet as piper, James Thomson, joined the finale. The Concert Band goes from strength to strength and we look forward to 2007 when the Concert Band returns to Castle Toward for the residential course in June.
